Movie Review: Demolition (NC16)
Jake Gyllenhaal plays investment banker Davis, whose wife is tragically killed in a car accident.
Unable to cope with the loss, he unravels in the most bizarre way possible - writing letters to a vending machine company and picking up a love for demolishing things such as a refrigerator, a coffee machine and houses.
Naomi Watts is Karen, a customer service rep from the vending machine company, and they strike up a strange relationship.
The dramedy, directed by Dallas Buyers Club's Jean-Marc Vallée, plods along and at points is heavy-handed with cliches.
Watts is reliable as always, but there is nothing particularly outstanding about her performance.
It is Gyllenhaal, who has perfected playing characters with questionable motivations, who deftly carries the entire weight of Demolition.
Verdict: 3/5
