Movie Review: RED AMNESIA (PG13)
Chinese director Wang Xiaoshuai's latest film starts off as a thriller.
Stage veteran Lu Zhong plays a tough but stubborn old lady, Mrs Deng, who has just lost her husband and starts receiving anonymous phone calls daily.
Lu is impressive and she captures her character's emotions and nuances.
Red Amnesia then segues into a drama that explores Mrs Deng's tense relationship with her two grown-up sons in modern Beijing - one happily married, the other gay.
Beneath the family drama, the film conveys a political message, depicting the lasting damage and misery that the Cultural Revolution left over the decades.
Red Amnesia's slow pacing requires patience, yet it leaves an indelible impression after it concludes.
Rating: 3/5
