Star Style with Michelle Chong and Lulu
Local celebrity Michelle Chong prefers simple styles, especially when she has to dress boldly to be alter-ego Lulu
You may have seen her on the Channel 5 comedy series The Noose.
Lulu, the Chinese national character played by local actress and film director Michelle Chong, has now graduated to the silver screen.
Lulu The Movie, which follows her leaving China for Singapore, earned about $650,000 in its first weekend, showing on 29 screens after premiering on Nov 24. It was the third highest-grossing movie over the period ending on Nov 27.
"I'm happy that this has finally come to fruition after talking about it, and working on it on and off for three long years," said Chong, 39, who had to switch between being herself and playing Lulu for the film's publicity events.
ACCENT
"Sometimes, when I was asked questions as Michelle, I would answer with the Lulu accent because I forgot to revert," she said, laughing.
"Generally, I don't get confused because they are two very different people.
"Actually, it can get quite tiring playing Lulu and conversing in her accent."
But if there is anything Lulu is known for besides her accent, it is her sense of style.
Glamorous Lulu
"There's no such thing as too much," Lulu said of her fashion choices.
"I love clothes that feature leopard, zebra, or snake prints, as well as those with ostrich feathers. But this outfit is something I'll wear as the second costume for my wedding.
"My look was inspired by Madonna in 1985."
Day-to-day Lulu
"This is one of my simpler styles," Lulu said of the outfit above.
"This is what I would wear to go shopping at Marina Bay Sands."
Lulu, who is best known for her massive perm and the "show-armpit pose", said her sense of style is not going to change.
"In the movie, Lulu says dying is easy - staying true to yourself is hard.
"This is Lulu's style. Lulu loves leopard prints and 'bling bling' forever."
Casual Michelle
"Bell-bottoms are making a comeback," said Chong.
"This pair is really flattering, especially for my figure. It elongates my legs and makes me look like I have a tiny waist."
The T-shirt is an example of Chong preferring comfortable outfits that are still stylish, as having to constantly wear a wig gives her a headache.
"It's casual, but it's also quite hip and stylish. I love it because you can wear it absolutely anywhere."
Put-together Michelle
On the days Chong does not need to wear a wig to transform into Lulu, she prefers easy and "efficient" styles that are suitable for multiple occasions.
"This is the kind of outfit I'll put on if, for example, I have a dinner business meeting and another formal event straight after," Chong said.
"I think it looks classy. Plus, black and white are easy to match."
