Dell unveils new Alienware gaming series of laptops
Dell launched its first virtual reality-capable laptops at the Club Millian in St James Power Station on Oct 18.
Alienware, a subsidiary of Dell which handles the company's gaming products, introduced the Alienware 15 and Alienware 17 laptops.
Previously, virtual reality (VR) games could be played only on desktop computers. VR laptops are a relatively new phenomenon and earlier this year, Origin and Asus launched VR capable laptops as well.
I got to try two of the new VR games which required me to be fast, agile, nimble and tested my sense of balance to the max
The first game, Audioshield, was a real test of reflexes and I had to be quick on my toes to deflect the missiles which came my way. I did not do very well in the game as I could not cope with the many missiles which came from all directions.
The second game was the Virtual Reality Challenge, where the player has to walk across bridges at a great height without falling. It was much easier as I do not have a fear of heights. I just had to be careful with my steps and I was able to walk across all the bridges quickly.
The new Tobii Eye tracking technology has also been introduced in the Alienware 17. This technology will allow users to use their eye movement to play the game, which creates more realistic and more immersive gaming experiences.
In addition, the new products also feature backlit keyboards which light up when the user looks at the keyboard and turns off when they look away. This allows minimal distraction while playing a game.
Some of the other improvements with the laptops include better sound, lighting, and reduced thickness. The Alienware 17 is 30mm thick, a full 4mm thinner than the previous version while the Alienware 15 shaved 9mm off the previous version and is only 25mm thick.
Mr Raymond Wah, 48, senior vice president for consumer product marketing at Dell, said the new features were introduced after extensive feedback from gamers about the previous products.
"The products we design for Alienware has always been inspired by delivering the best and ultimate experience for gamers," said Mr Wah.
The new Alienware Aurora, a gaming desktop, was also introduced at the event. It is designed to deliver VR and and resolution which is beyond-4K so as to enhance the gaming capabilites.
It also includes a new system which optimises internal cooling of components so that gamers can play for a longer time without the laptop over-heating.
The new products are targeted at regular gamers who want to improve their gaming experience and also professional gamers who compete in eSports.
Mr Wah said: "We will look into ensuring our customers who invested in an Alienware which is VR capable will enjoy the best VR experience without worrying about the applications not running smoothly or experiencing malfunctions."
*The Alienware 17 will be available for sale at Dell.com.sg from the end of the month at $3,999 while the Alienware 15 goes for $2,399.
