Movie Review: Everest (PG)
Since most of us will never see Mount Everest with our own eyes, this movie shows the best - and worst - of what it can offer.
Based on a true story, it's about expedition leaders Rob Hall (Jason Clarke) and Scott Fischer (Jake Gyllenhaal), who team up to take their clients to Everest's summit in 1996 but disaster strikes when a severe storm hits.
The first half of Everest paints an idyllic picture of their adventure - peaceful chants with monks and the colourful streets of Kathmandu. But the second half shows the terrifying reality of death from exposure, frostbite and altitude sickness.
The relationships between the climbers and the families they leave behind, like Hall's pregnant wife Jan (Keira Knightley), are also heartwrenching.
