Movie Review: Woman in gold (PG13)
Woman In Gold is inspiring and heart-warming, no doubt.
But the execution by Simon Curtis (My Week With Marilyn) is quite the opposite.
Helen Mirren, who can do practically anything, plays Maria Altmann, a member of a distinguished Jewish Austrian family, who fled Vienna during World War II at a young age.
The film follows the legal battles between Altmann - who is assisted by young lawyer Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds) - and the Austrian government in her quest to win back the titular Gustav Klimt portrait that was stolen from her family after the Nazis ransacked her home decades earlier.
Despite the compelling true story, the end result is tarnished by Curtis' attempt to cram too many facts and plot points.
He must really thank the great Dame Helen for keeping this drama afloat.
