THE RESULTS
Come Back to Me was released as the fifth single from the US singer's fourth studio album, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814.
The song reached No. 2 on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.
It also became Jackson's first No. 1 hit on the US Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.
THAT WAS THEN...
The R&B ballad, about a lover trying to rekindle a romance that faded a long time ago, received positive reviews from most music critics, with TV show Soul Train naming it "one of the more memorable songs during the summer of 1990".
Set in Paris, the music video was notable because the male lead, René Elizondo Jr, was Jackson's then-boyfriend. The couple married secretly in 1991 but divorced in 2000.
THIS IS NOW...
Jackson, 49, is back, seven years after the release of Discipline in 2008.
Jackson, who has been living a low-key life since marrying billionaire businessman Wissam Al Mana in 2012, said: "This year: new music, new world tour, a new movement. I've been listening, let's keep the conversation going."
The long-awaited album, due to be released this fall, is still untitled but will mark her first release under her newly formed label Rhythm Nation in partnership with music label BMG.
Earlier this week, she debuted her new single No Sleeep, a laidback track in collaboration with veteran producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
She will also be embarking on The Unbreakable World Tour in August.
