Concerned, readers give tip-offs
Last Thursday, as restaurant manager Alan Heng was driving to work, he noticed a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) fire engine and several ambulances by the road.
Mr Heng, 39, said: "I saw a huge commotion and then noticed that a crane boom had fallen."
Mr Heng told The New Paper that he parked his vehicle and went closer to investigate.
It looked as if the boom had crashed through some scaffolding and he feared someone might have been trapped under the rubble.
He then called the TNP hotline and the report was published the next day.
Fortunately nobody was hurt in the incident.
The avid TNP reader said: "I like the paper as it is smaller and easier to carry around. I purchase the paper at a petrol kiosk on my way to work every day.
"The stories are reported simply so everyone from different backgrounds in Singapore can understand."
Mr Fareez Bashir, 31, a TNP reader of 16 years, is also a fan.
Last Wednesday, the human resource executive was home around 6.30pm when he heard sirens.
He told TNP: "I saw heavy smoke in the sky and several vehicles, including a fire engine. I thought something had gone seriously wrong."
INVESTIGATE
He said he was particularly worried as the dark smoke came from a block that houses several elderly folks.
Concerned, Mr Fareez called TNP.
He said: "I informed TNP because I know investigations will be done and I would find out the details in the article if it is published. This way, the entire community will benefit from the knowledge as well."
He added: "The paper is tuned in to the recent news on the streets and it's good as the stories serve as an advisory to others."
The report was published last Thursday.
For their tip-offs, these readers will each receive $100 worth of Pezzo Pizza vouchers.
