New Face finalists get busy in charity bake-a-thon
Four of The New Paper's New Face finalists put their hands to good use, baking hundreds of scones and cupcakes for charity.
The girls put in shifts in the 72-hour bake-a-thon event known as Bring in the Dough, which started last Thursday and ended on Sunday.
Grace Ling, 17, Annmarie Pang, 22, Jessica Lim, 22, and Rinna Murni, 17, were at Sweetest Moments Bakery in Tai Seng Streetto bake the scones and cupcakes.
The event was organised by Electrolux, which partnered Food From The Heart, a non-profit organisation which runs a food distribution programme for needy families and individuals in Singapore.
There were also 16 volunteer chefs from the Singapore Junior Chefs Club and 200 members of the public who signed up as volunteer bakers.
Together, they whipped up more than 5,000 scones and cupcakes, which were distributed to 1,000 needy families.
Other beneficiaries included Rainbow Centre Children's Home, Pertapis Children's Home and Darul Ihsan Orphanage.
TIRELESS
Ms Koh Soh Hoie, general manager of Electrolux Singapore and Malaysia, said: "The team of volunteers, who have baked tirelessly night and day for the past three days to show their support for your community, have overwhelmed us."
Even though the girls were on their school holidays, they took the time to volunteer. They baked sun-dried tomato scones and coconut cupcakes.
It was Rinna's first time baking.
Said the PSB Academy student: "I thought it would be a fun experience. Also, it's for a good cause."
But baking was nothing new to Grace, Jessica and Annmarie.
Annmarie, who is working part-time at a cafe and who usually makes cheesecakes or cupcakes, said that baking is a good way for people to do charity work.
"This was for a good cause, so I came down," she said.
"Also, I missed the girls after the competition, so I thought it would be a good chance to see them again."
