Girl, 9, hearts TNP Big Walk
One of the youngest participants in this year’s The New Paper Big Walk is Amelia Han, nine.
The St Hilda's Primary School pupil is excited about attending The Big Walk.
Amelia, who was born with congenital heart disease, will be walking with her parents, Madam Dawn Teo, 45, and Mr Harry Han, 47, and her older sisters, Rachel and Michelle.
The doctors told her parents that she had a heart murmur that only got louder.
A cardiologist then confirmed that she had a leaky valve in her heart.
Madam Teo, a housewife, said: "We didn't know her condition was so bad because no child would have a valve problem this young."
After three operations, Amelia was finally discharged on March 2006.
She is now an active girl who enjoys cycling and playing games. She is also a beneficiary of Club Rainbow (Singapore).
This year, Yeo Hiap Seng (Singapore) has sponsored 20 places of the TNP Big Walk for Club Rainbow (Singapore) and five beneficiary families will be attending.
Ms May Ngiam, vice-president of marketing for YHS (Singapore), said: "We have been working with Club Rainbow (Singapore) for many years in events such as the Pink Dolphin Charity Walk.
BEFRIENDERS
"We are very excited to be participating in The Big Walk with Club Rainbow for the first time, as well as getting our staff to be befrienders."
Amelia and her mother are exercise companions.
They participate in Run to Walk SG at Bedok Reservoir every Saturday evening.
Run to Walk SG is a non-profit movement started by Singapore's top marathoner Mok Ying Ren.
Madam Teo said: "Amelia likes going for the walk. And because she also started cycling, she likes to take her bicycle out."
Madam Teo and her family had started their active lifestyle when she discovered she had borderline high blood pressure.
She said: "The doctors said that if I start walking and running, I would be able to reduce my risk in getting hypertension. So I decided to get my family to be more active as well."
Madam Teo is also looking forward to being at the Big Walk with her husband and three daughters.
She said: "Kids can't really join you on runs. So The Big Walk is something we can do together as a family and the kids don't have to run as well."
