'Strike ah!'
Germany fan wins $300 with TNP World Cup mug he redeemed
He is a fan of the German national football team, but had redeemed a mug with the Spain flag instead.
Naturally, Mr Lim Min Kwang was a little disappointed.
Still, he did not think much of it till two Wednesdays ago, when he noticed a picture of the weekly winning World Cup mug in The New Paper and wondered why it looked so familiar.
It then hit him.
The 58-year-old ran to his bedroom and picked up the Spain mug he redeemed days before and shouted: "Strike ah! Strike ah!"
He had won $300.
His exclamation alarmed his family and they came rushing into the room to see what had happened.
Said Mr Lim, a retail assistant: "My family and I were very happy when we found out. It's the first time we've ever won anything in a lucky draw."
Mr Lim had redeemed his lucky Spain mug, with the number 2 at its bottom, at a 7-Eleven outlet near HDB Hub.
Like him, Miss Eylaiza Benazir also won the weekly draw with her mug.
Other than the $300, she and Mr Lim also won a World Cup team jersey each.
Said the 18-year-old student: "It seems a little too good to be true, I guess we were fortunate."
Mugs, which are kept in unmarked boxes to ensure fairness in both the Weekly and Grand Draws, are given out randomly. Winners of the Weekly Draw can claim their prizes the following Thursday.
GRAND DRAW
The winning mug for the Grand Draw of $1,000 cash will be announced in TNP next Wednesday.
Wednesday's Weekly Winning mug was the England mug with the number 1. Those who have this mug can claim their prizes at the 7-Eleven outlet at Icon Village on Gopeng Street from 8pm to 9pm next Thursday.
Since its inception on June 16, The New Paper Collectible World Cup mugs have been a runaway hit. Nearly all of our first batch of 5,000 mugs were redeemed in just one day.
The second batch of 5,000 mugs was also snapped up quickly, before they were replaced by our final batch of 10,000 mugs.
These, too, are going quickly, and because of this, today is the last day for redemption of the TNP World Cup mug.
To redeem a mug, readers have to cut out and collect 10 coupons in TNP. Mugs can be redeemed at 7-Eleven outlets (except at airport outlets) where the 10th copy of TNP is bought.
