Rewarded for tip-offs
Her husband had abandoned the family and debt collectors had descended on her flat, looking for him.
Desperate for help, Madam Rafeah Abdul Kadir called The New Paper.
Her story was published in TNP last Tuesday and made the front page.
Madam Rafeah, a single mother of 11 whose children are aged between four and 18, said: "Everybody has their limit. This story is not to shame him or his mother. It is to show he's not doing his job as a father and husband."
Following the report, she received donations including about $1,500 from readers.
Another reader, Mr Muhammad Khair, 50, called TNP last Wednesday after he heard civil defence sirens when he was in his flat.
An old woman had been knocked down by a bus at Marsiling Lane.
Mr Muhammad said: "I was looking down from my corridor and I saw an SCDF (Singapore Civil Defence Force) officer putting an airbag under the bus. I decided to call The New Paper."
Mr Muhammad's tip-off revealed that Madam Zheng Yuan Ying, 86, who collected pieces of cardboard with her trolley, was knocked down and killed by a private bus on Marsiling Lane on Wednesday.

The story made TNP's front page on Thursday.
He said: "I hope that our Government can do something to help the elderly."
Mr Muhammad has been an avid reader of TNP since 1988, when it was launched.
Mr Philip Leong, 62, called TNP last Wednesday when he spotted a police tent, which was covering a body, at the bus stop in front of Block 343, Clementi Avenue 5.
He said: "I called The New Paper hoping I would be able to get the whole story from the reports."
A man in his 40s was found dead at the bus stop, where he had stopped for a rest. He had experienced breathing problems after cycling.
The story was published last Thursday.
