Cheryl Wee embraces the retro style on and off screen
While actress Cheryl Wee often goes retro on screen, vintage looks are not a big part of her personal style
Local actress-singer Cheryl Wee sported retro wear for most of her scenes in Channel 5's 1980s crime drama Mata Mata and upcoming 1950s film My Love Sinema.
But vintage fashion does not make up much of Wee's personal style, with only skirts and hairbands incorporated into her outfits for a touch of retro.
The 29-year-old daughter of the couple behind local hair and beauty chain Jean Yip Group, Jean Yip and Mervin Wee, is making her big screen debut in My Love Sinema.
In the romantic drama, now showing in cinemas, she plays a Chinese teacher who falls in love with a film projectionist (Tosh Zhang).
Wee's character is mostly togged out in 1950s-style dresses.
VIBRANT
She told The New Paper: "I love dresses from that era, especially the fuller skirts and the vibrant colours. I also love the hairbands that give a Blair Waldorf (a character from US TV series Gossip Girl) look.
"Through Mata Mata and My Love Sinema, I learnt that the fashion styles of those eras were livelier and a lot more colourful, and they had more patterns and floral prints.
"I have fun wearing those outfits because I feel like I am in a time capsule," she said.
Wee defined her personal style as "mix and match", saying: "It is influenced by the nature of my job, and my role models (US actress) Jessica Alba and (US fashion blogger) Aimee Song.
"They represent the modern and independent women who dress very simply but lookfabulous.
"It is also important to ask myself where am I going, and what occasion is it before I choose my outfit.
"When I feel good wearing it, then I will look good in it," she said.
CASUAL CHERYL
TNP PHOTOS: JEREMY LONGWhen helping out at Jean Yip Group, Wee is usually in black as it is the "company colour".
But when off duty, she avoids black as much as possible "as it tends to get boring".
She is a fan of layering clothes, which explains her choice of an orange jumpsuit worn over a plain white T-shirt, which she paired with a white cap (all from Topshop).
Adidas Stan Smith sneakers ensure her feet were comfortably dressed as well.
DATE NIGHT CHERYL
At 1.63m tall, Wee loves jumpsuits as they elongate her body, making her look taller.
She paired a black strapless jumpsuit from local brand Collate The Label and an off-white Sass & Bide blazer with high heels from Charles & Keith.
She said: "I love adding a blazer to date-night outfits becaus
SPORTY CHERYL
Wee is conservative when she is busy keeping fit.
She said: "I never wear just a sports bra to exercise - I usually cover my body up."
She prefers to wear dark bottoms and bright tops, such as this pink-and-black ensemble from Puma.
"Darker colours help to shape your thighs and make you look like you have nice long legs," she said.
e you can choose to put it on or take it off. Plus, they can cover your arms."
WORK CHERYL
When getting down to business, Wee turns to Collate The Label for its "modern woman" pieces such as this dark blue bell-sleeved frock.
She paired it with a statement necklace from Topshop and black high heels from Steve Madden.
"I can be quite a lazy dresser sometimes, which is why I like dresses," she said.
"I pair dresses with a necklace or bracelet, and high heels can instantly glam up the look."
