Fire consumes Choa Chu Kang dormitory
A fire broke out at a three-storey workers' dormitory along Choa Chu Kang Avenue 1 on Thursday (June 11) at around 9am.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was informed of the fire at 9.30am and found the blaze raging at the container building.
When The New Paper arrived at the scene, a group of over 200 construction workers from the adjacent construction site had gathered.
Close to half of them, employed by Kuan Aik Hong Construction, lived in the burning dormitory.
Workers TNP spoke to said all their money and belongings were inside.
Some had just been paid yesterday.
The SCDF sent a total of three fire engines, three Red Rhinos, two fire bikes, six support vehicles and two ambulances to the scene.
The SCDF could not confirm if there were any casualties but a spokesman said the fire was put under control after 30 minutes and was extinguished within an hour.
A spokesman for SCDF said that three firefighters were injured during the firefighting operations.
The injuries included chest pain, backache and a swollen foot.
There were no other reported injuries.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
