He called TNP about restaurant fire
Security guard calls TNP hotline after seeing fire
Security guard Joshua Singh, 47, was having his breakfast at Tekka Market last Monday when he noticed plumes of black smoke billowing out in the distance.
Intrigued, he walked closer and saw flames coming out from the second storey of Jungle Tandoor Restaurant, in Serangoon Road.
Suddenly, he heard several explosions and saw people running away.
He said: "When I first saw the huge fire coming out of the building, I was wondering how such a blaze could have happened.
"I realised that people would want to know about it too, so I immediately called The New Paper."
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) sent two fire engines, a Red Rhino, a support vehicle and an ambulance to the scene. An SCDF spokesman said the fire was extinguished using two water jets and no one was injured.
Mr Singh's story was published the next day.
When asked why he chose to call TNP, Mr Singh said: "I have been reading TNP every day since the 1990s, so it felt natural for me to call.
"I'm glad that I was able to help get the story out there."
For sharing his story, Mr Singh will receive a $100 Pizza Hut voucher.
