SDP's Chee Soon Juan to contest
Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) secretary-general Chee Soon Juan announced yesterday that he will contest the coming election.
This will be the first time in 14 years that he is contesting.
He could not be fielded in 2006 and 2011 because he was declared bankrupt after failing to pay $500,000 in damages for defaming then-Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew and then-Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong during the 2001 General Election. He was cleared of bankruptcy in 2012.
Mr Chee also introduced two more candidates at a press conference at the party headquarters in Ang Mo Kio: Ex-political detainee Wong Souk Yee and Mr Sadasivam Veriyah who contested Sembawang GRC in 2011.
Eight other SDP candidates, including healthcare administrator Chong Wai Fung and medical professor Paul Tambyah, have already been introduced.
The SDP has said it plans to contest the new Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, Holland-Bukit Timah GRC and the single-seat wards of Bukit Panjang, Bukit Batok and Yuhua.
