The top 5 most headscratching moments at the rallies on Friday
Day four of the hustings for the elections on September 11 gave us nine rallies.
Every party except for SingFirst was represented.
And with so much happening, it's only natural that some candidates made us go "huh?"
Well, that happened a lot on Friday night (Sept 4).
Here are some of the most head-scratching moments and quotes from the evening.
1) Reform Party's Andy Zhu's spirits
Mr Zhu, who is running in West Coast GRC, had a couple of 'd'oh' moments.
First, his handphone kept ringing during his rally speech.
He then sheepishly said: "Sorry ah, I'm going to switch off my phone first."
And then in another moment, he said: "Give me some spirits".
Presumably this was a way to get supporters to cheer, but it's not really the best thing to say during the 7th month.
2) Mr Lim Boon Heng explains why politicians have white hair
Mr Lim, the former cabinet minister and PAP chairman, shed light on this mystery.
He said: "If you take a photo of a politician today, and another of them five years on, a lot of them have a lot of white hair as they are worrying for you.
"The grey hair that Mr Goh Chok Tong has, the grey hair that Mr Lee Hsien Loong has... it's all for you."
Hmm, I wonder if everyone will be clamouring to dye their hair white just in time for polling day on Sept 11.
3) Gilbert Goh's difficulty in campaigning in Ang Mo Kio GRC
The Reform Party candidate for Ang Mo Kio GRC had many head-scratching quotes - some veering dangerously close to xenophobia.
An example?
"It is difficult to campaign in Ang Mo Kio because half the people we speak to are foreigners. Some may be new citizens."
He then proceeded to give these "new citizens" some advice: "You're having a good life now but in 10 years there'll be a new batch of foreigners, and you'll be miserable."
Mr Goh, an activist known for his anti-foreigner sentiments, also said that the reason why many people don't own cars can be attributed to the number of expats here.
He also added: "And without cars, people are not employable."
Erm, we highly doubt that Mr Goh.
4) Why does Reform Party candidate Siva Chandran want to become a full-time MP if gets elected?
He said: "If I get voted, I will be a full-time MP. Because traveling on the MRT is very tiring."
Mr Siva, are you ready for meet-the-people sessions that can go on past midnight? Traveling on the MRT will be the least of your worries.
(Also, I do it every day and I haven't quit my job... yet).
Mr Siva, when talking about CPF, also said: "Even the money we burn for our ancestors will reach our ancestors. But we don't know when our CPF money will reach us."
Again Mr Siva, it is the 7th month...
5) Mr Abdillah's crushed dreams
Mr Abdillah Zamzuri, who is Singapore People's Party's candidate for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC said: "I wanted to play professional football, but I couldn't play for Manchester United."
He said that his father told him not to have such crazy ideas.
"So I had to adjust," said Mr Abdillah.
We love the "shoot for the stars" concept but we also like a little dose of reality once in a while.
