10 residents flee as Geylang shop unit catches fire
He was driving home early on Wednesday morning to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri when he saw thick black smoke coming out from the first storey of a shop unit at Geylang Road.
"I was driving on the lane nearest the shop and the smoke covered half of the road," Mr Mizan Maslan, 33, told The New Paper yesterday.
The IT consultant immediately stopped in front of the shop, Lian Hup Seng Kee Trading Co.
"About five women ran down from the second storey just when the fire engine arrived," he said.
Mr Willdy Suali, 39, who was mopping the floor at No Signboard Seafood restaurant across the road, said he heard an explosion.
He said: "It was so loud I thought it was an accident at first."
EVACUATED
When TNP visited the site yesterday, a burning smell was still present. The shop owner declined to comment about the incident.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted at 2.02am on Wednesday. A fire engine, two Red Rhinos, an ambulance and a support vehicle went to the scene.
About 10 people living on the upper storey had evacuated before the SCDF arrived. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
