Big Walk participants can enjoy National Gallery opening celebrations

National Gallery Singapore opened yesterday with a slew of free events for the opening celebrations, just in time for the Jubilee Big Walk

The treats - visual and material - never stop for SG50 Jubilee Big Walk (JBW) participants.

One of the many visual highlights for the nearly 25,000 Walkers along the 5km route is the newly-revamped National Gallery Singapore (NGS). There, they can bask in the grandeur of the Old City Hall on Saint Andrew's Road, and snap selfies against the backdrop of its reincarnation - the NGS.

After the Big Walk, participants can drop by NGS and enjoy an array of programmes planned as part of the opening celebrations for NGS, from Nov 24 to Dec 6.

Ms Suenne Tan, director of education and programmes for NGS, said: "National Gallery Singapore aims to provide a differentiated art experience for visitors to fully explore and appreciate art and its history.

"We've crafted activities to give the public many ways and reasons to connect with art, and hope to inspire more to develop a deeper understanding of Singapore and South-east Asian art."

Share The Hope is a grand audio visual production designed with inspiration from the art in the Gallery, sponsored by Cartier.

For three nights only, be captivated by the stunning displays of light, sound and visuals set against the backdrop of the newly transformed NGS, which previously housed the high court and government offices.

From Nov 24 onwards, 10am to 7pm (Monday to Thursday) 10am to 11pm (Friday to Sunday)

About 800 Singapore and South-east Asian artworks will be on display for visitors to experience the timeless appeal of the masterpieces.

One of the well-known artworks is a painting titled Drying Salted Fish, by Nanyang artist Cheong Soo Pieng, which is an image printed at the back of our $50 note. It is displayed at the DBS Singapore Gallery.

The Nanyang Style is a regional art movement where a mix of styles and techniques from Chinese and Western traditions are used.

3 IN THE NAME OF RED

Dec 4 to Dec 6, 9pm, 15 minutes, Padang Atrium

A performance by dancers from The Arts Fission Company, it pays homage to the distinct hues of red found within the Gallery's artworks.

In shades of stunning maroon, crimson and ruby, dancers invite visitors to rediscover the stories behind the works as they perform against the backdrop of a cascading grand staircase at the Padang Atrium.

Articulate your thoughts to an artist from the Organisation of Illustrators Council, who will interpret them into a personalised and unique artwork for you to take home for free.

5 MEMORA(FILM)IA: RANDOM ACTS OF REMEMBERING

Visitors get to watch the world premieres of three short films specially commissioned to realise the opening celebrations' themes of memory and hope.

6 RESONATES WITH: AURAL NARRATIVES

Nov 27 to Nov 29, Dec 4 to Dec 6, 7.30pm, 8.30pm, 9.30pm, 20 minutes, Padang Atrium

Curated by multidisciplinary artist Bani Haykal, the performances feature cross-genre musical collaborations between ensembles and musicians. Visitors will be immersed in a unique soundscape inspired by artists like Liu Kang and Chen Wen Hsi.
