Big Walk's oldest participant does it to stay healthy
Age no problem for active retiree couple, who are looking forward to this year's Big Walk
Taking part in the Big Walk has been an annual tradition for retirees Tang Sim Peng and his wife, Madam Jenny Seow Noy Kim, since 1991.
Next month, Mr Tang, 84, and Madam Seow, 79, will be back again at The New Paper Courts Big Walk.
Madam Seow said: "I think it will be interesting since the (Singapore) Zoo and (Night) Safari are new Big Walk locations.
"It's going to be a different feeling."
Mr Tang said they had only missed the Big Walk on two occasions, the first of which they could not remember.
But the more recent one was last year's SG50 Jubilee Big Walk. Mr Tang had an operation.
The couple still keep some of the goodies from the past walks.
"We have the shirts and goodies from the past years' walks, they are all still in our rooms," said Mr Tang.
Madam Seow fondly recalled the heavy downpour during one walk.
She said with a laugh: "We walked in the rain and really had fun. It is the walk that I remember the most.
"Everybody still enjoyed themselves despite the rain.
"The only thing was that my 'baju' (Malay for shirt) was white, so it became a 'see-through' (after getting wet)."
While Mr Tang and Madam Seow enjoy going for such events together, she said the rest of her family members are "too lazy" to participate with them.
Madam Seow said: "When we go (to The Big Walk), we make friends with people our own age because the young people think that I am antique."
But age is not keeping the couple away from such activities, said Mr Tang, who goes for advanced line dancing classes every Monday and Thursday.
Madam Seow added: "I go for zumba classes once a week, line dancing classes on Thursdays and gym training on Mondays.
"The New Paper Big Walk is another way for us to stay healthy."
