Driver trapped after car rams into tree
A domestic helper and her employer yanked at a jammed car door for 15 minutes to free its trapped driver after his car rammed into a mango tree.
The accident happened at the junction of Jalan Unggas and Jalan Tempua, off Dunearn Road, on Tuesday afternoon.
Miss Yuli Rahmawati, a 29-year-old Indonesian who has worked here for six years, said: "I heard a loud sound and I saw part of the tree fall to the ground. Madam asked me what happened and we went outside."
A burgundy Nissan Teana sedan had crashed into a mango tree outside the house next to Miss Yuli's employer's house.
The male driver was hurt and stuck inside the car, so Miss Yuli and her employer tried to rescue him. They tugged at the driver's door for about 15 minutes before it could open.
STUCK
"The door was very hard to open because it was stuck. I also had to push tree branches out of the way to open it," said Miss Yuli.
"The driver said his chest was hurting. Madam asked him if he wanted to come into the house to rest but he said no."
She said two women were in the back seat of the car. One of them injured her knees but she could still walk slowly, said Miss Yuli.
"Madam also asked her if she wanted to come into our house to clean up. But she said no as her father lives nearby."
Miss Yuli added that the woman's father lives in a bungalow two units away and often takes walks around the estate.
The police said that two women, aged 57 and 61, were taken conscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
Miss Yuli was relieved that the driver and his passengers were not badly hurt in the accident.
"I just did what I could to help. I wasn't scared as I've seen worse accidents in Indonesia," she said.
Workers were later seen cutting down and removing the mango tree.
