Five games to try at The New Paper Readers Carnival
The New Paper Readers Carnival opened its doors yesterday to welcome everyone - from the young and to the young at heart - to join in the fun. Best of all, admission to the event at Singapore Expo, Hall 6, is free. We gave the games a go to rate five of the best
The New Paper (TNP) Readers Carnival is an event for friends and family to come together to enjoy the weekend.
To receive free instant photos, take a photo and upload it on to your Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #TNPCarnival.
Your photos will be printed at the Instaroid booth.
There are also attractive prizes to be won at the games and hourly lucky draws are held from noon to 6pm daily. A $100 cash prize is to be won at each lucky draw.
You can redeem prizes like DJI Phantom 3 Professional Drone, GoPro Hero 4, Nerf Blasters and more with the tokens you get from playing the various games.
The carnival has something for everyone. Look out for the coupons in TNP from today to Sunday to use there.
More credits can be bought at the carnival itself to play the games.
MONKEY RACE
The game pits you against other players in a race to make your monkey climb the fastest.
To get the electronic monkeys to move up a tree, you have to throw balls into selected holes.
The machines are placed side by side for competitors to view each other's progress. It is one of the few games that allows you to play against your friends, making it great for friendly competitions.
JURASSIC NERF MAZE
Mr Alastair Tay Kai Lun (right), 20, was the winner of the Nerf Maze Competition held from 3pm to 4pm yesterday.
In the competition, players have to go through the Jurassic-themed maze and shoot the targets, which are placed in different locations. The fastest player wins.
Mr Tay completed the entire maze in 47 seconds despite it being the first time he took part in a timed competition, though he has prior experience in Nerf competitions.
Said Mr Tay, who is waiting to enlist for national service: "I'm not here for the prizes. I just wish to challenge myself and see how fast I am able to complete the maze."
True to his words, Mr Tay generously gave his prize, a Nerf gun, to a young boy who came in third.
CATCH THE FROG
To fish for frogs is truly a test of patience. Players are given a fishing stick with a long metal screw attached for a hook.
The small frogs are constantly opening and closing their mouths and you have to manoeuvre the screw and get it caught in one of the mouths to win tokens.
The few times the frogs closed their mouths before I could get the screw in made me frustrated, but the satisfaction of winning was incomparable.
CROSSBOW
Be the Katniss Everdeen or Robin Hood of Singapore in this game. While you do not get to use a longbow like the two iconic characters, the crossbow provided comes close.
Small balls are suspended in air by a controlled gust of wind from below them. Players need to hit the balls using the crossbow to gain tokens.
ANGRY BIRDS
If you thought playing Angry Birds on your mobile phone was tough, wait till you try the real life version.
You are given two chances to catapult a red Angry Bird soft toy to topple a cardboard block.
Seven out of eight times, I ended up having to dodge the toy that shot in every direction but forward.
It is probably the most challenging game at the carnival.
