How to win over the judges
New Face 2015 judges share their expectations and tips
Today is the last chance to get into Round 2 of The New Paper New Face 2015. The Walk-In audition - from 2pm at Bugis+ - will be judged by a panel of seven judges.
TNP speaks to four of the judges to find out what they're expecting to see.
THEY ARE:
- l Sharin Keong, 23, 2012 New Face winner, Mannequin Studios model (SK)
- l Eunice Annabel Lim, 21, 2012 New Face finalist, actress (EAL)
- l Ian Lee, 31, Fashion Editor, Her World, SPH Magazines (IL)
- l Dollah Jaafar, 59, Creative Director, Singapore Press Holdings (DJ)
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING OUT FOR THIS YEAR?
SK: "Someone who has charisma and can make my head turn when she walks by. She must also have the right proportion for a model."
EAL: "I like girls who exude confidence and a little sensuality, like Nathasha Rahmat, who won the title of Best Catwalk in 2012."
IL: "Stand tall, make eye contact and smile because first impressions are important in modelling."
CAN THEY DO ANYTHING TO MAKE THEM STAND OUT?
EAL: "From my experience, girls with a good, strong walk stand out the most."
DJ: "If she has special assets like lovely eyes or gorgeous lips or high cheekbones, then make sure that special asset is highlighted with the right makeup."
IL: "Clothes should be simple. Neat nails, groomed eyebrows and a pair of pumps can also help you look more put together."
WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR THE GIRLS TO AVOID?
SK: "Do not force yourself by trying too hard and make a fool of yourself. Don't wear ultra short skirts or shorts that allow some parts of your body to be seen."
DJ: "Never make monkey faces or silly expressions."
IL: "Don't wear heavy makeup or overly fancy clothes because it will distract the judges from your natural beauty."
WHAT ENCOURAGEMENT WOULD YOU GIVE THE GIRLS WHO ARE WORRIED, SHY OR UNCOMFORTABLE ON STAGE?
SK: "If you make a mistake, don't show it on your face! Just smile and carry on. But please don't fall off the stage!"
EAL: "It's a natural process to feel worried, shy and uncomfortable on stage. Just take deep breaths in, stay calm and smile."
DJ: "It's natural to have these feelings. But use your confidence to overcome it."
What they remember most
The New Paper spoke to three of last year's New Face finalists about their best experiences of the competition
"When it was my turn to walk, so many things were in my head, like if I was going to fall or if my posture was all right. But after I was done with my catwalk, it felt great because it made me feel like I've accomplished something."
- Syiqah Marican, 20, second runner up
"Rehearsals were so much fun, hanging out and fooling around with the girls. We practised our walks, took pictures and really got to know each other. "
- Annmarie Pang, 23, finalist

"There's just a tremendous surge of emotions that overcomes you when you're on a raised platform, in high heels in front of so many people. There is a lot going on: you feel proud of yourself, scared and invincible. It can be overwhelming but I think everything takes practice."
- Chanel Lyn, 24, finalist
