Price war: Which telco has the better deal?
Singapore's fourth telco hasn't been chosen yet, but already a price war has begun.
It started when MyRepublic announced its plans to offer an unbelievably cheap $8 a month mobile plan with 2GB of data.
The company also dangled an enticing unlimited data plan, something that M1, StarHub and Singtel do not offer.
On Wednesday and Thursday (March 9 and 10), all three existing telcos announced huge cuts in prices, with M1 and Singtel offering upsized data plans for $5.90, and StarHub offering a 3GB-for-$3 promotion.
Funnily enough, MyRepublic may not even be our fourth telco.
The mobile airwave auction is set for the third quarter of this year, and if the fibre broadband services provider doesn't win, these $8 dream plans might just remain dreams.
Here's how the companies measure up against one another.
(Note: MyRepublic's two plans are SIM-only plans.)
M1, Singtel and StarHub don’t have unlimited data plans. If you really want unlimited data, choose the cheapest plan and simply bust the data limit.
The capped prices on excess data charges will ensure a fixed price every month.
Just make sure you have deep pockets. The price can go up to a whopping $208 a month.
(Note: It is best if you use your unlimited data to make calls and send messages as the plans don't offer that much.)
If, like many Singaporeans, you enjoy changing your phone at least once every two years, these plans would be more suitable.
All three telcos have slashed their prices for data add-ons.
So you want to switch phones AND have unlimited data.
Just choose the cheapest plan and bust the data limit. The capped prices on excess data charges will ensure a fixed price every month.
(Same logic as the SIM-only plan with unlimited data. Similar prices, too.)
