Probation for SGH doctor who attacked father for owing God money
A senior consultant at the Singapore General Hospital was on Wednesday (Jan 6) sentenced to 12 months of supervised probation for attacking her 81-year-old father.
Tham Kwang Wei, 43, who is a director at the SGH Life Centre's Obesity and Metabolic unit, had earlier pleaded guilty to holding an 18cm long knife to her father's neck, arm locking his neck and biting his left forearm.
She was upset as she felt her father owed God $150,000 in church contributions, which he had not paid.
The incident happened on Sept 30, 2014, at about 7.50am at Dr Tham Ngiap Boo's clinic in Whampoa.
His daughter entered the clinic and told him to give her the money so she could return it on his behalf.
When he refused, she took out a knife, held it against his neck and forced him into a chair.
A clinic assistant called the police.
She was subsequently diagnosed with depression with psychotic features.
For the offence, she could have been jailed up to two years, fined or both.
