Shake a tail feather: Parrots on show at Our Blocks Rock Party

Keen on seeing exotic parrots?

From African greys to macaws, you can admire more than 50 parrots at today'sOur Blocks Rock party at the hard court of Block 50, Dorset Road.

The Birds Interest Group - birds enthusiasts from Moulmein Farrer Park Residents Committee -is also set to give a talk on how to take care of birds at 3.30pm.

It'll be educating the public on topics like how to train birds, how to breed them and how to spot sickly birds before buying them.

"A lot of people have not seen these birds. We want to show them and at the same time, educate them on how to treat birds," said Mr David Martin, 64, founder of Birds Interest Group.

Since completing the Saham Kesihatan programme, Ms Norma Yaacob has stayed active with her treadmill and weights at home.

Moulmein-Cairnhill residents can expect much more than the bird show at the party.

From 1pm to 7pm, residents will be treated to a whole range of activities, from dance performances to a ukulele session to watching a local movie on a bus.

Dance group Optimax, a regular performer in the area, will be dancing to trendy tunes.

Optimax founder Muhammad Sofrie Shukor, 22, said: "I had no background in dance when I started the group, but I thought of ways to attract youth to the community centre.

"Dance seemed the most suitable and now, we have many members."

If you're into salted egg in everything, you won't be disappointed by the Little Red Cap stall.

It will be selling salted egg fish skin, tapioca and potato chips at $15 per bottle or $28 for two.

Cakes in a jar from Bake Experiments will be sold at $5.50 each, with flavours such as mango, salted caramel cheesecake and ondeh-ondeh.

You can round off the fun-filled day with Jack Neo's film Long Long Time Ago on the Be My Kaki Movie Bus. The People's Association (PA) bus travels around the island, showing local movies.

Today's block party is the sixth of 17 block parties jointly organised by PA's Panel of Activists for Community Engagement (Pace) and The New Paper.

Mr Melvin Yong, Grassroots Adviser to Moulmein-Cairnhill, said: "Our Blocks Rock is an excellent platform for aspiring residents to showcase their talents, make new friends, pick up a new sport and learn some life skills such as CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and Improvised First Aid Skills.

"The vibrant multi-cultural activities and the opportunity for residents to share their interests serve to promote cultural understanding and good neighbourliness.

"Through the simple, fun and interactive emergency awareness activities, our residents can become better aware of the need to strengthen our community vigilance, cohesion and resilience.

"The collaboration between TNP and PA provides fresh insights towards youth engagement and how the community can come together as one to respond effectively in times of emergencies."
