Accidents, loanshark vandalism prompt calls

He was punished for something he did not do.

Two of his cars had been splashed with bright red paint, apparently by loanshark runners.

A note demanding payment, left on one of the vehicles, had the details of another resident. Mr Ephraim Long, 22, called the police, then The New Paper's hotline last Thursday morning.

Mr Long, who owns a car rental company, said: "I was shocked but recovered quickly. I just wanted to spread awareness, as things like this do happen and we need to keep an eye on them."

He has been reading TNP for seven years and it was his first time alerting us to a story. The report was published the next day.

Said Mr Long: "It was an informative story. I like the human interest stories in the paper. It's compact, with interesting and exclusive news."

Another reader, Mr Gary Haris, 41, was stuck in a traffic jam when he saw the aftermath of a collision between a lorry and taxi on June 13.

Said Mr Haris: "One of the cars was half destroyed due to the impact caused by the lorry."

The business development manager immediately called TNP's hotline.

The accident occurred along Serangoon Road, in front of the Central Sikh Temple near Boon Keng MRT station, around 7.15am.

After the initial collision, the impact caused the taxi to swerve, and, according to some eyewitnesses, it then hit a 22-year-old female pedestrian. The story was published the next day.

Mr Haris, who has been reading TNP for 15 years, said it is his favourite newspaper.

"The paper is precise and easy to read. It also has a lot of colourful visuals which tell stories vividly," he said.

Another reader, Madam Nadira Raub, was walking home from the market on June 17 near blocks 116 and 118 in Bukit Batok West Avenue 6 when she saw a collapsed linkway roof. It had been hit by a crane, which the driver of the lorry it was on had forgotten to lower.

Madam Nadira, a housewife, alerted TNP about the collapsed roof.
