Two hold down upskirt suspect in mall
Passers-by wrestle and pin down man allegedly seen taking upskirt video in Yishun mall
He was manning a promotion booth at a Guardian pharmacy outlet at Northpoint Shopping Centre yesterday afternoon when he heard a commotion near the escalator.
At first, the 54-year-old promoter thought that someone had fallen down.
But he soon realised there were actually two men wrestling and pinning down another man who was struggling and thrashing about to break free.
A third man was holding the mobile phone of the suspect, which still had its video recording function turned on.
After a few minutes, several security guards arrived.
The witness, who wanted to be known only as Mr Vincent, said: "The three men explained to the security guards that they saw the man taking an upskirt video of a woman who was travelling on the escalator with him.
"They caught the man before he could escape."
By then, a crowd had gathered.
The suspect, who appeared to be in his 30s, tried to cover his face with his shirt when several people in the crowd tried to take pictures of him.
A sales person at Guardian, who only wanted to be known as Mr Ng, 69, also saw what had happened. He said: "I thought it was a case of theft.(The man) kept asking for his phone, to delete the video, I presume."
BRAVE
Another sales promoter at Guardian added: "He deserved to be slapped. The three men who helped were truly brave."
Passer-by Najib Siddik, 33, who is in the education industry, agreed, saying: "I really admire the three men for their bravery. It's something you don't see every day."
Mr Vincent said the victim appeared to be in her 20s and was wearing a knee-length skirt.
"She looked scared and didn't say anything. She remained at the scene until the police came about 15 minutes later.
"How would the suspect feel if his wife or female relative was the victim of an upskirt video?"
Police said they received a call at about 4.40pm requesting for assistance.
On arrival, they established that a case of insulting the modesty of a woman had occurred.
Other witnesses said they saw the man being taken away by the police.
Investigations are ongoing.
