Which phone plan should you get?
Confused with all the new mobile data plans? We break it down for you
Earlier this month, potential fourth telco MyRepublic announced its plan to offer an $8 a month SIM-only plan (without phone) with 2GB of data.
The company also dangled an enticing unlimited data plan, something Singapore's three main telcos do not offer.
Not to be outdone, M1, StarHub and Singtel slashed the prices of their data add-ons for their mobile phone plans in quick succession.
MyRepublic's announcement came as a surprise as the fourth telco will only be decided in the mobile airwave auction later this year.
It is not the only one gunning for the mobile frequencies offered by the Infocomm Development Authority.
Wireless network solutions provider Consistel has also thrown its hat into the ring, though it has not announced any mobile plans.
1. IF YOU WANT SIM-ONLY PLANS WITH LIMITED DATA
It is important to note that the price cuts for data add-ons do not apply to SIM-only plans.
2. IF YOU WANT UNLIMITED DATA BUT NOT NEW PHONE
Want unlimited data? It will cost only $80 a month for new MyRepublic customers, or $60 a month for existing broadband customers.
While Singtel, StarHub and M1 do not have unlimited data plans, they do put a cap on data charges. So choose the cheapest plan and simply bust the data limit.
The cheapest option, however, will still come up to $180 - more than double the price of MyRepublic's plan.
3. IF YOU WANT NEW PHONE WITH LIMITED DATA
If you like changing your phone at least once every two years, these plans are more suitable for you.
All three telcos recently slashed their prices for data add-ons.
M1 and Singtel are offering upsized data plans for $5.90.
StarHub is having a 3GB for $3 promotion until the end of this month.
4. IF YOU WANT NEW PHONE WITH UNLIMITED DATA
Choose the cheapest plan and bust the data limit. The capped prices on excess data charges will make sure you know what to expect on your bill.
