Sorry, we're off! Most S'poreans want to travel during SG50 long weekend
Thanks for the extra holiday - but it seems like most Singaporeans do not plan to stay over that August weekend.
Singaporeans are more likely to go overseas during the SG50 long weekend than stay behind for the Republic's 50th birthday celebrations, according to our online poll.
Of the 490 TNP readers who responded to the survey, about 6 in 10 indicated that they would be leaving the country during the four-day break.
When asked if Singaporeans should stay for the Jubilee Weekend, 302 respondents felt that they were not duty-bound to do so.
The minority who felt Singaporeans should stay in Singapore to celebrate the milestone mostly argued that citizens should stay out of pride as the country's 50th birthday only happens once.
Here are some selected answers from the 150 over responses:
"If Singaporeans don't celebrate, then who will?"
"Being away in a foreign country on the special 50th birthday of your country just shows how much the country means to you."
"Where else can you celebrate SG50 and make meaning of it?"
"I wouldn't be around for another SG50 to happen. I wanna be celebrating in SG."
