After witnessing the blaze from the Certis Cisco van as he drove past, his first instinct was to call The New Paper about the incident.
Mr Syed Yasin told TNP: "I wanted to let people know what was going on, that there was a fire near VivoCity."
The 56-year-old delivery driver, who works for a retail company, started reading TNP seven years ago.
He chose to alert TNP about the incident last Thursday as he felt that this newspaper was reliable and publishes news quickly and accurately. The report was published last Friday.
Mr Syed often buys his daily copy before work and will read it at the end of the day.
"The New Paper is very easy to take around due to its smaller size. The news is also easy to read and helps me keep up with what happens in Singapore," he said.
Added Mr Syed with a grin: "Now I can show off to all my friends and tell them that the article was in the paper because of me."
He was also relieved to find out from the report of the incident that no one was injured.
Another reader, Ms Lynne Tan, 31, who works at Bunny Wonderland, a private rabbit rescue group, also had her news article published in TNP on June 21.
ABANDONED RABBITS
She felt compelled to call TNP after she received a call from a passer-by at Bishan Park who had found abandoned rabbits.
Fearing that there may have been more rabbits yet to be found, one of her teammates, a frequent TNP reader, advised her to call in.
She said: "My intent was for more people to be aware of the missing rabbits and to look out for them if they happened to visit the park."
It was also her love for the animals that prompted her to get more outside help from the public.
"It may just be a rabbit to some people, but it is still a small and frail animal that needs to be taken care of."
