Ex-construction worker in S'pore spotted cooking rice in Hong Kong airport
A Shandong man who used to work in Singapore as a contruction worker has found Internet fame after he was spotted making a meal with a rice cooker at the Hong Kong International Airport on Sunday.
Mr Wu Jiayong, who was on his way home after being let go from his job here where he worked for about a month, had missed his connecting flight after oversleeping at the airport, reported Apple Daily.
After forking out HK$200 ($35.76) for a replacement ticket, a hungry Mr Wu didn't have enough money left to buy himself a meal in the airport.
So the 46-year-old improvised, whipping out a $35 rice cooker which he purchased in Singapore, to make his own lunch using a power socket in the departure hall.
A passer-by shot a video of the unusual sight and submitted it to Apple Daily, where the clip went viral.
Nickname
The incident has also saw Mr Wu pick up a new nickname - "Rice Cooker Bro".
Since then, Shanghaiist reported that Mr Wu is now safely back in his hometown of Laiwu, where he spoke of his gratitude to the people in Hong Kong who had helped him.
Mr Wu said: "I was famished, and they bought me something to eat and drink.
"Lost in a strange land, I didn't know where to go. I'd really like to thank all these people from the bottom of my heart who gave me so much help."
Improper use
However, it could have been a different story for Mr Wu if he had been caught using the power socket.
A spokesman for the Hong Kong airport said the sockets were not for personal use as they are meant for facility maintenance and cleaning staff.
Anyone caught using the socket improperly could have been fined up HK$10,000 and sentenced to up to three months in jail.
