How taxi fare changes will affect you
The fare structures for taxis will be standardised from the second half of this year, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Tuesday (March 31).
Here are the proposed changes.
Flag-down fares
What's different: No change; Companies can continue to decide on their own fares for different taxis
Currently, there are nine different flag-down fares, ranging from between $3.20 and $5, across the six cab companies.
Metered rates
What's different: Each cab company can have only one set of metered rates for their standard fleet and one set for their premium fleets
Currently, Comfort, City Cab, Trans Cab, Premier and Prime each have two sets of metered rates.
SMRT has three sets of metered rates.
Surcharges
What's different: Various surcharges and their timings for standard and premium taxis will be standardised across the industry
Currently, though it is not mandated, all cab companies' peak period surcharge is set at 25 per cent of metered fare, while the midnight surcharge is priced at 50 per cent of metered fare.
The city area surcharge is also standardised at $3 for all companies.
The timings for the surcharges are about the same with only a minute difference for midnight surcharge – some end at 5.59am, while others end at 6am.
