Movie Review: Spotlight (NC16)
Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams got Oscar nominations for their acting.
I don't quite agree with the selection, as there is no standout performance.
Everyone is equally good in this drama that follows the Spotlight team - a small group of dedicated investigative journalists - from The Boston Globe, who in 2002 exposed the sickening truth behind decades of child sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests.
For journalists, it is rewarding to see how reporting is done best and in the old-school way.
No spotlight is cast on the bad guys or the actual misdeeds, it is just a story on the process of news gathering and revelation.
Yet everything works out excellently - equal parts engaging, emotional and enlightening.
It just shows the importance of a great script and even better storytelling.
