The Mrs Singapore pageant has always focused on its charity aspect.

This year, though, there was a slight twist.

Usually, contestants had to raise money to secure goods such as adult diapers for the elderly.

However, this year, all 22 contestants were asked to step up and acquire electronic goods for the Society For The Aged Sick.

This request came from the society itself, which just built a new wing on its premises.

Hearing an appeal for donations of food and diapers may be easy to comprehend.

But what about TVS, standing fans and microwaves?

It presented many difficulties for the women who had to explain to those they approached why it was a worthy cause.

The contestant that came out tops in the one-month challenge because she refused to give up is Ms Sheetal Kaur (pictured below).

The mother of a six-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter managed to secure 24 TVs, 24 standing fans and two microwaves for the charity.

These electronic goods are worth $7,000.

Despite being rejected countless times by people and companies who asked her what was in it for them, she persevered for her cause.

Ms Kaur, 35, a marketing director, told The New Paper: "The hardest part was when I called this huge company that sold electronic goods in Serangoon Road.

"They told me that they would think about it and didn't give me an answer for three weeks.

"During the three weeks, I kept calling them back and on the last day, I told them that it was the last day for them to donate.

"And they actually asked me to go over to their company and collect their donation of seven TVs!"

As a result, the elderly at the Society For The Aged Sick will now have a combined total of $40,000 worth of goods from all the contestants.

Ms Kaur said that she has been doing charity work since she was 20, when she first did it as part of the requirements as a Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight attendant.

Since then, every week, the former SIA girl and her husband of seven years will take their children and visit various homes for the elderly in Singapore and bring them meals such as chicken rice.

Soon, Ms Kuar will also be setting up her own foundation for children with cancer.

She said: "This foundation is close to my heart because I have friends whose nephews and nieces have cancer.

"Some of them are unable to afford medical care and my charity is to help these kids fulfill any wishes they have.

"I'm so happy my husband shares the same values as me when it comes to giving back to society.

"In fact, he was the one who pushed me to join this pageant. It's my first pageant and he said that through it, I can help raise more awareness for charities in Singapore."

The Mrs Singapore pageant finals will be held on May 9 at the Orchid Country Club.

Two weeks ago, the contestants visited the Society For The Aged Sick and and entertained them with special performances.

Ms Kaur dressed up as Catwoman while her son joined her on stage as Batman.
