Car drives onto Capitol fountain, causing hole in ground

A car drove into a fountain area at Capitol Singapore yesterday afternoon and one of its wheels sank into the ground when some of the paving tiles gave way.

"The fountain was turned off then, so maybe the driver mistook it as a drop-off point for passengers," said a 26-year-old sales assistant at Capitol Building, who wanted to be known only as Ms Yabut.

Mr Yoong Keng Kai, 34, an associate scientist, called the TNP hotline to inform us about the incident. He said: "I was shocked because the building had just been renovated a year ago, so how could there be a 'sinkhole'?"

When contacted, a spokesman for Capitol Investment Holdings said: "A car erroneously entered the fountain area of Capitol Singapore by squeezing between two large flower pots used to cordon off entry into the area.

"As the car tried to reverse to move out of the unauthorised area, one of the wheels was lodged into the ground of the fountain area."

The car was removed and the area cordoned off.
