Army, police face off with protesters near Krabi airport

This article is more than 12 months old

Hundreds of squatters and their families faced off with the army and police near Krabi international airport on Friday (Nov 13).

They threw missiles and used flagpoles as weapons, local news website phuketwan.com reported.

The protests broke up after a while.

They wanted the Thai government to allow them to continue working on public land, despite laws to the contrary.

The demonstrators have been growing oil palm trees in government land.

On the road near the Krabi airport, a small group of people, who are against the protests, held up a sign:  “Please don’t damage Krabi — don’t close the airport.”

It is not clear whether any flights were affected.
