BENFICA WIN BACK-TO-BACK EUROPEAN CUPS
The Lisbon giants became the first side other than Real Madrid to win the European Cup when they beat Barcelona 3-2 in Berne in 1961. Benfica then retained the trophy as Real were defeated 5-3, with star man Eusebio scoring twice in the final in Amsterdam.
CARLOS LOPES WINS PORTUGAL'S FIRST OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL
Won gold and broke the Olympic marathon record at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. Lopes also won silver in the 10,000 metres in Montreal eight years previously and three world cross country championship golds.
PORTO WIN THE EUROPEAN CUP
The Dragons fought back from a goal down to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the 1987 European Cup final, claiming victory with a 77th-minute back-heel from Rabah Madjer and an 80th-minute volley from Juary.
ROSA MOTA BECOMES FIRST PORTUGUESE WOMAN TO WIN OLYMPIC GOLD
Mota took the top step on the podium in the Olympic marathon at the 1988 Games in Seoul. The win was her 10th out of 13 marathons going into the race, an astonishing level of consistency over such a long distance.
