Korean singer Dean treated screaming fans to surprise performance
Getting a glimpse of rising South Korean R&B singer Dean was not enough for these 30 fans.
They wanted to be at the meet-and-greet session at Sands Expo and Convention Centre yesterday afternoon, and stand in the priority queue in front of the stage during the autograph session at Novena Square 2 atrium last night.
But to snag the passes, they had to perform all sorts of activities - from dancing to writing a short excerpt on their favourite song.
The dedication was certainly real for student Nur Dinie Izzati, 18, who succeeded after submitting three entries - a poem on how visceral Dean's songs are, a two-liner excerpt on him, and another short excerpt combining his song titles.
The Anderson Junior College student told The New Paper:
"I thought sending three entries with different forms would boost my chances of getting picked, and show how much I really wanted to win the contest."
Siblings Nurul Raihan, 18, and Nurul Raihana, 16, uploaded clips of their performance on Instagram to get in the priority queue.
Mr Raihan uploaded 10 clips of him dancing to Dean's songs while Raihana, who used to run a Twitter fanbase for Dean with 40,000 followers, sang his song What 2 Do.
Mr Raihan said: "I don't feel embarrassed. During the fan meet with Korean actor Kang Ha-neul last month, I danced in front of him."
At the autograph session, Dean greeted an estimated 600 fans who occupied four storeys of the shopping mall.
Thundering cheers echoed throughout the mall when the fans caught their first glimpse of the star on the escalator at about 8.10pm.
They cheered more loudly when host Dee Kosh teased them about a possible surprise performance on top of the planned autograph session.
SURPRISE
True enough, Dean surprised the packed audience with not just one song, but four.
He even sprayed the audience with water from a water bottle, eliciting squeals of delight from the fans.
Ms Mathilda Sin, 18, was probably the luckiest of the bunch as Dean gave her a hug midway through his performance.
A stunned Ms Sin said later: "I have no comment. I am speechless."
Dean also high-fived everyone who went on stage to have their CDs signed.
Ms Fransesca Naila, 18, who was with Carmen Chin, 16, in the queue since 10am, said she had no regrets attending the fan meet, despite having to sit for an exam today at 8am.
"It's a rare opportunity to meet him. I don't know when he would come back next," she said.
