Movie Review: Hell Or High Water (M18)
The bank may be getting robbed - but it's not the victim here.
It's not uncommon for a movie to set up criminals as its heroes, but there's a special sort of ambiguity in Hell Or High Water.
Toby (Chris Pine) may be a robber, but only because the bank's taking everything he has, and he's trying to help his sons.
Marcus (Jeff Bridges) may be a lawman, but he's also racist and ignorant.
From the two bank-robbing brothers, Toby and Tanner (Ben Foster), to the Rangers chasing them, Marcus and Alberto (Gil Birmingham), and even to the bank itself, each character is deftly crafted, each showing how no one stands purely on the side of good or evil. With expert performances and a well-developed plot, the movie would've been perfect if not for the occasionally difficult-to-understand Southern accents.
Verdict: 4/5
