TNP GO Guide gives poly students ideas on further studies
The New Paper GO Guide: Beyond Poly
Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) student Prashain Kumar is more attuned to options offered by private education institutions (PEI) after reading The New Paper (TNP) GO Guide: Beyond Poly yesterday.
One report, Rebel With A Cause, about a student who is pursuing a communications degree after completing a diploma in molecular biotechnology, piqued his interest.
Mr Prashain, 19, said: "The article showed that it is possible to change courses of study, and that there are PEIs that give us that opportunity."
MORE OPTIONS
The third-year student, who will graduate next May with a diploma in mass communication and then serve national service, said that the quality of education is "more important than a school's brand name" when deciding on which university to apply to.
Mr Prashain, who was among the NP students who received The TNP GO Guide: Beyond Poly yesterday, said: "It's good there are more options now (through different PEIs)."
The 20-page guide was in copies of TNP that were distributed free to graduating students in NP, Singapore Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic and Republic Polytechnic.
It is one of four GO Guides produced by TNP every year. Each guide is targeted at different student cohorts - O- and A-level holders, adult learners, and polytechnic graduates.
Ms Mariah Atiqah, 19, a third-year health sciences student at NP, is thinking of pursuing a part-time nursing degree at a PEI.
She said: "The cohorts are probably smaller so I think the lecturers can give more attention to the students. The GO Guide included salaries and vacancies available, so that I know how important nurses are in Singapore."
NP student Marcus Yap, 17, who is studying aerospace technology, said the GO Guide has useful information for his future plans.
He said: "I'm uncertain on what career to pursue but the Go Guide included the numbers of vacancies of certain positions and the salaries too, so I'll take those into consideration."
