5 exhibits to check out at SDC's 20/20 Play

Remember Little George the talking robot, or the Visionarium Design Studio?

Most 80s and 90s children here would remember them from visits to the Singapore Discovery Centre (SDC) during school days.

On Nov 19, SDC celebrated its 20th anniversary with a fireworks display, dance performances, music and carnival games.

The SDC was officially opened by late former president Ong Teng Cheong in 1996.

As part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, the SDC launched a special exhibition, 20/20 Play At SDC, which takes visitors back to the games and playgrounds of their childhood.

This is all part of the SDC's continuing work.

Said Mr Lowrence Chua, executive director of SDC: "Since our inception, we have stayed the course of iterating the Singapore narrative, and finding ways to reinvent ourselves and move with the times so different facets of the Singapore story could be preserved and presented to the public in engaging forms and through a strong network of partners."

Here are five exhibits you should check out.

20/20 PLAY AT SDC

This special exhibition is bound to take visitors down memory lane.

The main theme of SDC's newest exhibition revolves around play and how it inspires people to build dreams for their future, said Mr James Ong, director of sales and marketing at SDC.

"Visitors can also relive their childhood memories with nostalgic games, and take a walk down memory lane to familiar sights, such as animal-themed playgrounds like the Toa Payoh Dragon Playground.

"Through play, visitors will be able to discover and learn from their interaction with others."

BATTLEFIELD COMMAND

Here, visitorscan lead military machineries such as the Leopard 2A4 Tank, Frigate and Apache Fighter to battle enemy forces.

It is Singapore's first immersive third-generation SAF game that is designed for the public.

Mr Ong said: "Players get to immerse themselves in real-time war scenarios by undertaking key command roles in land, air and sea forces... to battle the enemy for the ultimate victory."

CROSSFIRE PAINTBALL ARENA

Visitors can experience being in the front lines of war through this arena (left), and can even try shooting with replicas of Bravo-1 rifles.

Mr Ong said: "The Crossfire Paintball Arena is Singapore's first multi-tiered field which replicates the harsh natural terrain.

"Players are required to be meticulous in their tactical strategies, to overcome their opponents."

The field where the game takes place features hills, to give players a more unique and challenging experience.

Each paintball session is by appointment only.

VISIONARIUM DESIGN STUDIO

An all-time favourite at the SDC.

Visitors make choices through a series of questions to imagine the future of places such as Orchard Road and Bugis.

The results are displayed on a stunning 360-degree digital video screen.

ON-LOCATION REPORTER

If you have ever wondered what it is like to be a reporter, this exhibit will give you a chance to try just that.

Mr Ong said: "Visitors get to see themselves on a screen while reporting news on key milestone events in Singapore, much like a professional news anchor, where the entire process is also recorded."

Visitors will be able to learn more about Singapore as there are 20 stories to choose from.

It can also be done in a selection of languages: English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil.
