Expect more from new-look TNP

In just two days, The New Paper you have known and loved will undergo a major change.

We will provide more of the news that matters to you, for free.

From Thursday (Dec 1), more is what you can expect from the revamped TNP, which, after flying solo for 28 years, will merge with MyPaper.

With a circulation of up to 300,000 copies, TNP will be distributed from Monday to Saturday at selected malls and various places including MRT stations. (See report at below.)

The paper will also be available free online at tnp.sg

We will be creating content catered to professionals, managers, executives and businessmen (PMEBs).

Mr Eugene Wee, 42, who will take over as the newspaper's editor on Thursday, said: "There will be a greater focus on news that will affect our target demographic, which are PMEBs in their 20s to their 40s.

"This will include news and analyses on the economy, jobs, property and personal finance.

"But we will continue to have the classic TNP stories that our readers love - stories that inspire you, touch you; stories about people in Singapore."

Mr Wee said TNP will still be delivering the best sports and entertainment news, adding, "the best part is that it's all free".

There will also be changes to the type of news that you read and the way the paper is designed.

TNP news editor Dave Ang, 53, said there will also be specific themes, like career or health, on different days.

He added that there will no longer be an M section, which was the entertainment pull-out supplement.

Instead, entertainment stories will be spread throughout the week.

There will also be changes with TNP on the digital front.

TNP digital news editor Jonathan Roberts said: "Online, you get more - whether it's more pictures, more videos, interactive graphics or online exclusive content."

The new-look website will also help direct readers to more related content.

Mr Roberts, who was also involved with the redesign of TNP, said that a key point was to give more content, especially on the front page.

For example, where TNP used to have pictures on its front page, there is now going to be a full story there.

Mr Solomon Lim, TNP chief sub-editor, said: "We want to be able to give readers all the news they need, quickly and succinctly. Which is why we keep it brisk and breezy in our News sections."

FIRST ISSUE

With the changes in TNP, the newsroom has been busy preparing for the first issue of the new TNP.

Mr Dominic Nathan, the paper's current editor, said: "We are running the current TNP and also mock ups of the new TNP to give us an idea of the changes needed. That's more of the excitement of starting a new product."

Mr Nathan said there has been much discussion with TNP stakeholders, including new deals being struck with advertisers.

He said: "The editorial team is working closely with the marketing team to make the product a success.

"The signs are very promising, especially in the tough economic climate we are now experiencing."

A TNP reader, Mr John Yeo, 60, who has been reading the paper since it started 28 years ago, said that he welcomes the added content.

"I'm looking forward to the revamp, (I) think it will be better with more news (content)," he said.

Mr Yeo can look forward to Thursday's edition of TNP, which will have 96 pages.
