Till death do us part: 6 cases of couples killing each other in Singapore

When a lovers' spat gets out of control, passion and anger can form a very deadly mixture as recent events have shown.

On Sunday (March 13), a 68-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his wife at their Compassvale Flat. A day later, on Monday (March 14), an odd-job labourer was sentenced to 9 1/2 years' jail and three strokes of the cane for killing his Vietnamese girlfriend during a drug-fuelled argument on Nov 20, 2014.

Here are six other recent incidents of couples killing one another in Singapore:

1. YUAN CHING ROAD DOUBLE DEATH

He posted cryptic messages on Facebook about letting "the devil get what the devil deserve (sic) in due date" amid a bitter divorce with his wife.

On the morning of Jan 8, 2015, Ong Wei Poh (above, on stretcher) turned his words into gruesome action as he slashed Madam Koh Siang Hua, 39, 30 times, severing one of her jugular veins, at their Park View Mansion home in Yuan Ching Road.

He also attacked his domestic helper, who had tried to intervene, before sending out an e-mail titled "Jurong Murder" to several parties, including Singapore Press Holdings.

Ong then stabbed himself in the abdomen four times before authorities arrived and took the couple to National University Hospital, where they both died from their injuries.

Last August, State Coroner Marvin Bay ruled that there was "a significant degree of premeditation by Ong" before carrying out the killing of his estranged wife and following through with his plan to commit suicide after that.

2. HEADLESS BODY IN WHAMPOA RIVER

A cleaner and a jog made a grisly discovery on the morning of Dec 12, 2013, when they came across a trash bag containing the body of Madam Jasvinder Kaur in Whampoa River.

As the corpse was headless and handless, police were forced to use forensic science to identify the Indian national, who was working here as a beautician.

Forklift driver Gursharan Singh was arrested and jailed 30 months for helping his friend Harvinder Singh, Madam Kaur's husband, dispose of the body.

According to Gusharan, Harvinder fought with Madam Kaur, who slumped onto the bed after being punched on the neck. Harvinder did not realise that his wife was dead until later and decided to dispose of the body.

By the time the body was found, Harvinder had fled Singapore on a bus via Woodlands checkpoint and remains on Interpol's wanted list for her death, which a coroner's court deemed to be a case of murder.

3. YISHUN TRIPLE MURDER

A lovers' spat over a crab dinner on Sept 18, 2008 spilled over into a murderous rage which left three people dead in Yishun.

Blinded with anger after his lover, Madam Zhang Meng, insulted him when he refused to give her money to buy crab for dinner, Chinese national Wang Zhijian (above) took a knife from the kitchen and attacked her 48 times before inflicting 45 knife wounds on Feng Jianyu, the woman's 17-year-old daughter.

He then turned on Madam Zhang's flatmate, Madam Yang Jie, who plummeted to her death after Wang cut her fingers as she clung on to bamboo holders under the kitchen window in a bid to escape.

Wang also brutally attacked Madam Yang's then-15-year-old daughter Li Meilin, who survived the ordeal.

On Nov 28, 2014, an appeals court ruled that Wang was guilty of murder in all three deaths and upheld the death sentence he received in 2012 for murdering Madam Yang.

4. ARGUMENT LEADS TO STRANGLING IN CHOA CHU KANG

His wife refused to return with him to China after his dependant's pass was cancelled because she wanted her daughter from a previous marriage to stay and earn a degree here.

And when Madam Liu Bi Jiao refused to get intimate with Hu Ziqing and insulted him further, the pair got into a fight that ended in him strangling her.

While Madam's Liu's daughter Liu Yan called the police for help, it was too late to save the beautician, who had come to Singapore on a dependant's pass in 2007 when Hu found a job here.

Hu, who lost his job in 2009 and suffered from depression because he was humiliated for depending on his wife's income, pleaded guilty to culpable homicide not amounting to murder last November and was sentenced to 10 years' jail.

5. SENJA ROAD MURDER

They were described as a quiet but loving and friendly couple by their neighbours at Block 636B, Senja Road.

However, an explosive argument in the early hours of Aug 31, 2015 resulted in the death of Mr Gordon Yeoh, who was stabbed in the face and upper body.

His wife, civil servant Vivien Teoh, has been charged with his murder.

Two more unrelated murders then took place in the following five days – a statistic that astounded ex-cops whom The New Paper spoke to.

6. TEMPESTUOUS AFFAIR ENDS IN YISHUN MURDER-SUICIDE

He was in a relationship with a married woman five years his senior.

But when Madam Pu Feiyan wanted to end her affair with manufacturing operator Wang Xingxing on Aug 17, 2015, it led to a quarrel which left both Chinese nationals dead.

Wang choked his lover to death and penned a suicide note confessing what he had done before leaping to his death from the 15th-storey Yishun Ring Road flat they were renting.
