Renner, Olsen join forces in Captain America: Civil War
US actors Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen join Team Cap in Captain America: Civil War
Avengers alumni Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen have entered another Marvel Cinematic Universe together -Captain America: Civil War.
And this time, they join Team Cap when the group stands divided and face off against their former colleagues on Team Iron Man.
The story picks up from last year's Avengers: Age Of Ultron, where Renner's master archer Clint Barton/Hawkeye shot Olsen's Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch - who possesses powers of hypnosis and telekinesis - with his arrow to stop her from getting into his mind.
Trying to overcome the pain of her twin brother Quicksilver's (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) death under Ultron (James Spader), she listens to Hawkeye, who inspires her to join the good guys and create a new family.
The connection between these two characters carries over into real life.
Speaking to M at the London Hotel in West Hollywood, Renner, 45, and Olsen, 27, who are currently filming new crime drama Wind River, are at ease with each other, making each other laugh as they discuss their films.
Did Civil War's storyline create two groups on set when you were not shooting?
Olsen: No. We would be on set together more often. It's a fun group of people. We all hang out during and outside work. I think everyone enjoys one another a lot.
How used are you to the superhero costumes?
Olsen: We tried to make it as practical as possible, so most of it is stretch leather. I have to be able to move my arms in full rotation so I had to figure that out.
I am in a corset and leather stretch leggings and heels. You are also aware that you are making an iconic image for toys.
Renner: They usually change it. This one has a different colour, is different and I now have a sleeve. I was sleeveless in the Avengers (movies).
But I like this one the best - it's the most comfortable.
The main thing for me was the pants because I was splitting them a lot (laughs), so they changed to this much more flexible material so I wouldn't offend people when I would bend to do something crazy.
Did you have to make any physical preparation for Civil War?
Olsen: I had to twitch my fingers a bunch (laughs).
I physically do different things now for stretching. This might sound weird but I was never someone to isolate things, so I have had to practise that. And that is not a real skill set.
Renner: Didn't sound like it either. You don't put that on your resume, do you?
Olsen: I have no idea what is written on my resume. I don't write it anymore, someone else does.
I don't know what my special abilities or skills are. It used to be volleyball and ballet. Now it's like I can move a finger on its own (laughs).
Renner: Archery for me was... a skill set that I needed to understand and be good at. I still shoot fake arrows (though).
Olsen: But the staff...
Renner: Yeah, the staff is new and I had a day to learn how to use it, which is cool and awesome.
Both of you are in Wind River. How different is it to make smaller-budget films?
Renner: We are having a ball doing that. But it's fun to shoot big movies because there are all these stunts. The craft services and food are also better.
Olsen: The amount of time you get to spend with everyone is longer and you get to be in different locations.
Renner: Shooting a smaller movie is a little bit more fulfilling as you get to delve much deeper into a character.
I think they are both fun and stimulating. Wind River came around my way and I was trying not to work but did because Lizzie (Olsen) was in it and I wanted to work with her.
It was a great opportunity for us to work together in a very real way.
