Driver, 81, crashes car at fire post
If there was ever a good place to crash a car, this might be it.
Attempting to exit the carpark at Block 55, Marine Terrace, an elderly driver yesterday accelerated across the carriageway, mounted the kerb, zoomed past the pavement and crashed into a tree, right in front of a fire post.
A witness called the TNP hotline yesterday morning when he saw the crash.
The impact was hard enough for the car's airbags to be deployed.
A spokesman said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to an accident at Block 15, Marine Terrace at 10.35am.
COUPLE
The New Paper spoke to the couple in the car, who both declined to be named.
The wife, 77, who was in the front passenger seat said: "I felt the car moving very fast before it crashed.
"My husband is a steady driver and drives quite slow. I'm not sure what happened today.
"I am just thankful we are not injured. Only a bit of backache and neck pain."
No one else was hurt in the incident.
The husband, 81, said: "I was scared after the car crashed. Luckily there were airbags to protect us."
SCDF dispatched an ambulance to take the couple, who had minor injuries, to a hospital but they refused to go.
