Drugs seized after tip-off to TNP
Man alerted TNP to men selling illegal prescription drugs in Geylang
His tip-off to The New Paper led to a drug seizure at Geylang almost three weeks ago.
When he first moved into his parents' condominium unit at Lorong 12 Geylang last year, he noticed a group of men hanging around the coffee shop nearby.
The reader, who wanted to be known only as Mr Tan, had contacted TNP on April 10 about illegal prescription drugs being sold there.
TNP contacted the Health Sciences Authority (HSA).
They and the police moved in and seized 880 nitrazepam tablets and 18 bottles of cough mixture on April 22.
Our report was published on April 29 and it was the cover story. Mr Tan said he was happy with the report.
The 25-year-old said: "The amount of effort and detail that went into reporting the story meant it came out exactly like how I experienced it.
"I feel great that my tip-off led to something big, but you never know when such things might happen again."
Mr Tan no longer lives in Geylang, but still visits his parents every few weeks.
Mr Eric Lim, 66, a security guard, also called in with a tip-off.
It was about an accident at Block 15, Marine Terrace on May 4 when a car, driven by an elderly man, mounted the kerb onto the pavement and crashed into a tree.
CALLING HOTLINE
Mr Lim was walking home when he was the accident.
He said: "I saw the car crash into the tree and decided to call the TNP hotline on the spur of the moment.
"I have the TNP hotline number saved in my phone."
He has been reading TNP for more than 20 years and enjoys the interesting stories.
Mr Lim was glad to be able to contribute his story to TNP and was satisfied with the report.
"It was the first time that I spoke to a reporter when (TNP) called me to ask for more information about the accident," said Mr Lim.
His story was published last Thursday.
Madam Jurina Johari, 42, was another reader who contacted TNP.
The part-time assistant pharmacist was robbed of her last $50 for the month on her way home at around midnight on April 24.
A TNP reader for about 13 years, she said: "Most people read TNP, and once the story is published, there will be faster follow-ups on the case.
"I hope the robber gets caught."
Her story was published last Friday.
