Quincy wins by massive 14 strokes
Quek in a class of his own with third successive 60s score
Quincy Quek towered over his rivals and set new highs yesterday.
He etched his name in the record books with what is said to be the biggest margin of victory over three rounds in a local professional tournament - a massive 14 strokes.
Th 29-year-old recorded a personal best - for the first time in his seven-year pro career, stringing three rounds in the 60s.
And he got away with only five bogeys out of 54 holes on what is believed to be the most difficult course in Singapore where some professionals registered double figures on certain holes.
On the final day of the $30,000 SPGA Par72 Golf Classic, Quek shot a three-under 68 to add to his 67 and 66 for a remarkable 201 total, that also earned him a $2,880 cheque.
Not surprisingly, his fellow golfers hailed him by saying that they could not believe what they witnessed at Laguna National's World Classic course.
Veteran Lam Chih Bing (75), who finished second and was in Quek's flight, said: "It was a very impressive showing, and most enjoyable to watch.
"He hardly made a mistake on a course that could really hurt you. All credit to him."
Lam added that he believed that he had previously won a local pro event by a big margin at the Orchid Country Club, but not by this gap.
Singapore Professional Golfers' Association president M. Murugiah said: "I have been playing pro golf for 30 years, but I have never seen such a showing by a local golfer.
"Quek's perfomance is a fillip to Singapore golf, and I am glad that he did us proud."
Quek was certainly over the moon about his superlative showing and credited his TaylorMade clubs, which have been with him for almost four years.
"I was certainly in the zone. I guess that my regular playing in competitions helped me with my consistency.
"And I think I've played enough on the Classic course to know where to land the ball.
"Playing in the last flight yesterday, I guess I knew I was way ahead by the turn, but I didn't allow that to interfere with my play. I just wanted to shoot a low number."
Quek's round yesterday was puncutated with six birdies and three bogeys, two of the birdies coming from long putts of about 20 feet.
In the Senior Division, Poh Eng Wah turned the tables on overnight leader Murugiah (74), by reversing a three-shot deficit into a one-stroke win with his 70 yesterday.
