Quincy's on song at Laguna's World Classic
Asian Tour qualifier Quincy Quek went one better than his brilliant round on Monday at the $30,000 SPGA Par72 Golf Classic at Laguna National's World Classic course.
He returned a sensational 66 yesterday on the challenging course that has earned the reputation for taming golfers to eclipse his superb four-under 67 the previous day.
The nine-under 133 total saw Quek (right) take a six-shot lead over fellow Singapore representative Koh Dengshan (72-67), and seven over Lam Chih Bing (68-72).
With a 13-stroke lead over fourth-placed Zaw Moe, the post-game banter was that Quek - who truly lit up the course - could win the title even if he brings just seven clubs, instead of the maximum 14, today.
Quek's dramatic round was laced with an eagle and four birdies against one bogey (he three-putted from 10 feet as he misjudged the speed on the par-three seventh).
The eagle again came on the par-five ninth - his finishing hole as he teed off from the 10th tee - in quite similar fashion as on Monday.
He used a driver and five-iron (hybrid on Monday) and again sank the putt from eight feet on the 475-metre hole.
Quek's birdies came on the 15th, first, fourth and eighth holes.
Koh enjoyed his round too, bagging six birdies and ruing two bogeys, but is left with a mountain to climb for the title.
In the Senior Division, Singapore Professional Golfers' Association president M Murugiah took over the lead after a fine 68.
He leads by three over Poh Eng Wah and seven over overnight leader Dino Kwek.
