Singapore to host South-east Asian Beach Volleyball Championships
Singapore will host the South-east Asian Beach Volleyball Championships for the first time this month.
The 29th edition of the biennial competition, which will feature 30 men and women's pairs from eight countries, will take place at the Palawan Beach in Sentosa from Sept 28 to 30.
Ang Wei Neng, president of the Volleyball Association of Singapore, said: "Singapore is proud to organise the SEA Beach Volleyball Championships for the first time, and this certainly will not be the last.
"Aside from putting up a fierce fight for the trophy, this gives us a good opportunity to showcase Singapore's hospitality, culture and lifestyle. We would like the visiting teams to build ties on the people-to-people level - not only on court but off court as well."
Play will begin from 9am and end at 6pm on each of the three competition days, with elimination rounds being played on three beach courts.
The semi-finals are scheduled for the morning of Sept 30, followed by the finals later in the afternoon.
Regional powerhouses Thailand will be the ones to watch again, after the men's pair of Prathip Sukto and Kitipat Yungtin, and the women's pair of Ariya Laosengsa and Kijja Khantarak triumphed in Vientiane, Laos, two years ago.
Singapore will be represented by the pairs of Gilbert Tan and Zhuo Hong Chuan, Mark Shen and Poon Pei Jie, and Trevis Tan and Yeo Sun Peng in the men's category.
Eliza Chong and Gladys Lee, Serene Ng and Ong Wei Yu, and Kelly Sim and Huang Zihui will fly Singapore's flag in the women's category.
Also participating are Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Timor Leste, the Philippines and Vietnam.
The public can watch all the matches for free at Palawan Beach, with limited seating on a first come, first served basis.
Those interested in VIP packages, which include premium seating at the grandstand terrace with the best view of Centre Court, can e-mail their queries to events@vas.org.sg.
